Debbie Lee & the 1RST Week of the Ahn Joo Truck

If you’ve read any UG post in the past two years, you know that Josie has always been a strong adherer to the phrase “Price: Pleasure.” And, as many of you may  know, I quit my corporate job two months ago to start a business and possibly pursue graduate school. However, along with the great feeling of independence came less (and less) disposable income. Starting a business has limited my time and bank balance. I am no longer bringing home a steady bi-monthly paycheck and working harder than ever has limited my time for bullsh*!  But, on the whole, I think this ‘I’m not going to pay for bullshi*! and I’m certainly not going to date bullshi*!’ mentality has been …

Roy’s Ohana Tour Excites & Delights

Roy’s Ohana Tour Excites & Delights

Every meal I’ve ever had at Roy’s has always been an insightful delight. And frankly, it’s nice to see a chain restaurant with some personality. If the food wasn’t enough to get you in the door, their new promotion should be. Until August 31st, Roy’s will be doing a special Ohana Tour promotion. This will allow the chefs at each location to creatively spin some of their most popular menu items. Here’s what we had:
Grilled Albacore Flatbread with Pickled Red Onion, Smoked Fetsa, Herb Pesto, and Tzatziki
Yellow Fin Ahi Poke with Wasabi Aioli, Avocado, and Caviar
Spiced Duck Confit Tarts with Sage Chevre (Goat Cheese)
Short Ribs of Beef Au Poivre with Truffled Tater Tots and Tomato Jam
Strawberry Basil Panna Cotta

“The …

Checkers Downtown Eclectic Wine Series

Checkers Downtown Eclectic Wine Series

I don’t have Mayoral status on Foursquare, but I may be the biggest Thursday patron at Checkers Four. Their dishes/drinks are always thoughtful and well-executed. I’ve worked in kitchens before and there are ’special’ kitchens where the work seems like simple manual labor, but the work is actually very profound. The caliber of quality is noticeable and the staff attentiveness is spot on. Checkers in one of those special places at the moment for me. This is a photo recap of last week’s FOUR happy hour. It was delicious. Tomorrow’s menu will have foie gras – btw. Foie gras for $4?! Ummm… Yeah, I’ll have to stop by.

Additionally, below is the info for the Eclectic Wine Series at Checkers …

Getting Our Connect on: ProjectConnect

Getting Our Connect on: ProjectConnect

Did you win our contest for the Project Connect event on Tuesday at the Coloft in Santa Monica? Because if you didn’t, you really missed out on a great evening. It was a ton of networking and meeting new people. This was an unusual event because it highlighted a few things that you don’t normally see at a networking event. Rather than focusing on who you had to meet the focus was on who you can introduce other people to. The event was organized by Stephanie, owner of Social Bling, and the main themes of the night were: listening, complimenting, and gratitude.
It was hosted at the coloft building in Santa Monica. The coloft is a space that allows entrepreneurs to come …

Thirsty Thursday: FOUR at Checkers & Chef Todd FTW!

Thirsty Thursday: FOUR at Checkers & Chef Todd FTW!

We have written about Checkers and their Thursday happy hour called FOUR for a long time, but it is truly our favorite weekly deal. The man on the left, Tyler, takes care of the drinks and the man on the right, Chef Todd, handles the food. They have fine-dining expertise and skill that is made affordable so you can easily indulge to your belly’s content. They offer four plates and four drinks for four hours (from 4p-8p) on Thursday for $4 each. It is the deal of the century. Last week after John Kelly Chocolates and before the Sexy Singles Soiree 2.0 we sampled all four of the dishes.

Last week the theme for FOUR was “Best of FOUR” paying homage …

Mi Piace: A Monday Night Happy Hour Worth Trying

Mi Piace: A Monday Night Happy Hour Worth Trying

One of the first places I ever went alone to in Los Angeles was Mi Piace in Pasadena. I was 17 and only a few months away from starting college at Woodbury University. I had to do some placement tests during the summer, so they knew what math and English classes to put me in. I knew no one in LA and my friend Sunshine (I am from Santa Cruz) was unable to come with me. She was several years older and we would always sleep at her brother’s house on our SoCal trips during my high school years. I had been conversing via AIM with a nice gay man that was an Interior Architecture Woodbury alum asking questions about …

Citysearch LA Dictators take on Las Perlas y Tequila

I attended the first Citysearch LA Dictator party last month, it was a night that took me to a new venue and reconnected me with old friends. This past Tuesday night was not that different. It was the second party and it took me to one of Ced’s newest creations called Las Perlas. It’s a tequila bar and Citysearch hooked us up with a preview of the new line of ultra premium tequilas called La Firma and some taquitos from Plancha Tacos. I ran into my new fav PR guy Edward and was joined by Minty, AK, and Linden. The chicken tacos made me so thirsty and I had no choice but to …

Gays & Dolls: A Magical Bar/Club Crawl through WeHo

Gays & Dolls: A Magical Bar/Club Crawl through WeHo

A couple of Fridays ago was the Minty’s Gays & Dolls Crawl. It was the event I was most looking forward to all of March. Josie was out of town and I was having a fantastic ceviche filled day with the girls. I bought a large ring, which I heard would help me attract a gay boyfriend. Apparently, the bigger the accessory the higher the rate of attracting the attention of a gay male. It was getting close to the time to head out for the crawl when it suddenly dawned on me: If I have a huge ring that is the attractor, then I need to have my nails in top form. I knew what I needed to do, …

Mo-Chica for Ceviche and Other Life Lessons

Mo-Chica for Ceviche and Other Life Lessons

I have been wanting to go to Mo-Chica forever as I am a lover of seafood, especially in the raw form. I have video evidence of me saying I love the tang (not the pootang) so the citrus marinade of the dish is what makes it perfect for me. I feel like I have been reading about Mo-Chica for years and I always thought it was a full service restaurant and one where you can only order seafood. Both of these assumptions were incorrect. Mo-Chica is situated within the Mercado La Paloma, which is on the USC side of town, not in the best neighborhood. However, this mercado has parking attendants, eateries, clothing and accessory vendors and more. It’s far …

Yelp Elite vs. CitySearch Dictators

Yelp Elite vs. CitySearch Dictators

On Wednesday, after over a pound of shrimp at Boiling Crab, the Minty took me as her +1 to the Yelp Elite party at Taix. My feelings towards Yelp have been mixed. Prior to having a blog, I loved Yelp, as soon as I took a bite into something delicious I phrased sentences in my head for a review. It was always this tight world of Elites, cliques, and the message board regulars.  After we started Uncouth Gourmands, we became fascinated with  the Yelp demographic; it was a group  I wanted to infiltrate and better understand. I finally got my Yelp Elite badge sometime in 2009. I went to the parties and from what I understand this was when Yelp …
