Some of the most beautiful moments often occur when seemingly disparate ideas come together. I came to this perspective about time and space last week while dining alone at the Viceroy in Santa Monica.
Alone, and in a quiet corner, I ordered two things from their happy hour menu:
Grilled Cheese with a shot of Tomato Soup
Beef Sliders with Arugula and Parmesan Cheese Waffer
As a self-proclaimed grilled cheese snob, I have to say, I really enjoyed the asparagus surprise in my sandwich. It looked great and tasted even better. The accompanying soup was forgettable but it played a nice balance against the colorful sandwich.
The sliders were tender to the taste and the salty melted parmesan waffer was a nice counter balance against …

Taste of the Nation: ‘Word is Bond’
by josie on June 7, 2010 Share
I’ve been listening to a lot of OG rap these days and I got to thinking, what if my life was an ongoing rap video? Unfortunately, it isn’t. However, if it was it would include: free flowing champagne, my best friend (peep), celebrity chefsville, little tidbits of LA’s best food, and a cute boy I once dated long ago. Oh, wait! That was this year’s Taste of the Nation. (Except I didn’t drink – I was driving.)
It’s the one event you wait for all year long, and every year, you’re never disappointed. I wasn’t. Taste of the Nation LA brings together 40 of LA’s ‘it’ restaurants for a great cause. We loved last year’s event and this year we couldn’t wait to volunteer …
Champagne & Chocolate Party @ John Kelly in HWood
by josie on June 3, 2010 Share
A good chocolate is like an unavailable man/woman. Your conscience tells you to avoid it, but your heart tells you to live in the moment. And even though you know you should put it down, you keep on going back for more. I think it’s obvious that when it comes to some men, I clearly have terrible judgement, but the same cannot be said when I speak about chocolate. Lemme tell you a story about a girl and some fudge… Ok, I’ll spare you the horny details, but I urge you to come and try the chocolates yourself.
This Saturday, June 5th, JK Chocolates will be hosting a party to celebrate their boutique launch. It will be complete with champagne and, of course, …
Going from LA and UG to SF: My Goodbye
by carina on June 2, 2010 Share
For the last two years, Uncouth Gourmands has been my life. For the last year and a half, I have shared my Uncouth Gourmand adventures with you. Josie and I were inseparable and I still cannot go to any event in LA without people asking where my other half or partner is. It is a role that I have loved because I have met so many great people in the food, restaurant, PR, blogosphere and Twitterazzi worlds. I have lived in LA for the last 6 years, long enough for me to attend both college and grad school and really only since my time as a UG did this monstrosity of a city, LA, feel like a home to me. …
Muy Caliente at Gjelina
by josie on May 27, 2010 Share
Time: Lunch
Place: Gjelina, Venice
Occasion: Business Meeting
It seemed like everyone and their mother had been to Gjelina but me! So when I had a business meeting with a couple of my westside girls, I knew exactly where I wanted to go. I had just seen Gjelina in Travel + Leisure Magazine, but I first took note of the Abbot Kinney joint in a January magazine issue. Travis Lett, participant of the the Sexiest Chef Competition, graced one of the world’s most sacred publications, Vogue. Long story short – Travis es muy caliente.
It was a sunny afternoon in Venice and I, with my westside swagger, walked down the street with poise and confidence. Um, yeah, that is until Top Chef contestant, CJ, stopped me …
Gettin’ Cheesy with the Girls at Mac and Cheeza
by josie on May 22, 2010 Share
Mac and Cheeza stands at the fringes of downtown LA’s Garment District and since the place came well recommended by WeirdTV, I planned a trip there with a few peeps. I was very hopeful that the place would be better than its parent restaurant, Larkin’s. (I’ve been there twice and didn’t care for it. Sorry.) I thought to myself, a place that solely sells mac and cheese?! I couldn’t have dreamed up anything more perfect. This is, however, coming from a girl who has been dreaming up crazy stuff her whole life and always been told she’d never be able to pull it off. I’m glad I don’t listen to most people. What’s the adage? “The short-sighted cynic is the biggest threat …
Uncovering the Secrets to the UG Mating Rituals: Part 1

Biologically and chemically, most men are attracted to luscious curves, voracious fertile appetites, and a keen intellect that ensures the survival of their progeny i.e. the future sperm donors of their lineage. Biologically and chemically, most women are attracted to…chocolate. Horrible cruel and unusual studies that require women to choose between their love of sex and their love of chocolate demonstrate that more than 50% of women actually prefer chocolate over sex. This may mean that somehow scientists need to genetically mutate the male genes to create the perfect man who can both perform reliably in bed AND have detachable limbs made out of fine Amedei Tuscan chocolate. While this option might eventually be necessary for …
