Outdoor Cinema and Food Trucks

Regardless of whether it’s a date or a mate, there’s no doubt that this series of events will be fun. It’s movie night Saturdays near or around downtown LA and food trucks. Can you think of a more uncouth outing? I think not. I’ll probably be around for The Breakfast Club night if anyone would like to join in on some good cheap fun.
This summer series will feature over sixty different gourmet food trucks throughout eight weeks of favorite movie titles.  Thee Outdoor Cinema Food Fest creates the ultimate picnic environment for entertainment and food enthusiasts – no basket required!
Movies will be presented using only the highest quality projection, screen and sound available; which includes a 52 foot screen with …

Roy’s Ohana Tour Excites & Delights

Roy’s Ohana Tour Excites & Delights

Every meal I’ve ever had at Roy’s has always been an insightful delight. And frankly, it’s nice to see a chain restaurant with some personality. If the food wasn’t enough to get you in the door, their new promotion should be. Until August 31st, Roy’s will be doing a special Ohana Tour promotion. This will allow the chefs at each location to creatively spin some of their most popular menu items. Here’s what we had:
Grilled Albacore Flatbread with Pickled Red Onion, Smoked Fetsa, Herb Pesto, and Tzatziki
Yellow Fin Ahi Poke with Wasabi Aioli, Avocado, and Caviar
Spiced Duck Confit Tarts with Sage Chevre (Goat Cheese)
Short Ribs of Beef Au Poivre with Truffled Tater Tots and Tomato Jam
Strawberry Basil Panna Cotta

“The …

The Viceroy: SaMo

The Viceroy: SaMo

Some of the most beautiful moments often occur when seemingly disparate ideas come together. I came to this perspective about time and space last week while dining alone at the Viceroy in Santa Monica.
Alone, and in a quiet corner, I ordered two things from their happy hour menu:
Grilled Cheese with a shot of Tomato Soup
Beef Sliders with Arugula and Parmesan Cheese Waffer
As a self-proclaimed grilled cheese snob, I have to say, I really enjoyed the asparagus surprise in my sandwich. It looked great and tasted even better. The accompanying soup was forgettable but it played a nice balance against the colorful sandwich.
The sliders were tender to the taste and the salty melted parmesan waffer was a nice counter balance against …

1RST Annual Cultural Diversity Day

1RST Annual Cultural Diversity Day

My passport says I’ve been to over 19 countries around the world, and yet, I still feel I haven’t seen enough of the world. My usual MO is to plan a yearly trip abroad, however, last year was postponed and this year may very well be out of the question as well.  The inherent riskiness of starting a business is often underestimated and, as a result, Josie has been pretty damn broke. Just as I was feeling bad for myself, a friend sent me this invite for the First Annual Cultural Diversity Day in Los Feliz this weekend. And well, $8 I can afford.
I know we’re not always PC around here, but we’re always down to try anything – as …

“You look good baby, must taste heavenly/ I’m pretty sure that you got your own recipe/ so pick it up, pick it up, yeah, I like you/ I just can’t get enough I gotta drive through.” –“Carry Out”, Timbaland (featuring Justin Timberlake)
This week is brought to you by Top 40’s pop.  Each of the signs is going to get a Top 40s pop song assigned to them based on what the universe wants them to pay attention to. The stars have decided that they’ve had enough of this serious (read: boring) “amuse-buche/five course meal with wine pairing/digestif” bullshit. Mercury is out of retrograde, Mars is in the North …

Sandwich Me: My Top Sandwiches in LA

Sandwich Me: My Top Sandwiches in LA

I was the Editor-In-Chief of my high school yearbook and part of this job was selling senior ads from the parents of soon-to-be graduates. Of course, I made my mom buy an ad for me and I remember her writing I am so proud of you blah blah blah and then, “I hope you find great sandwiches and hot cement in LA.” Since then I have lived in LA for 6 years and I have found some great sandwiches. One of my uncouth gourmand icons is Liz Lemon and this quote may be the most profound thing I ever heard about humanity:

“Can I share with you my worldview? All of humankind has one thing in common: the sandwich. I believe …

‘If you insist on leaving your fate to the gods, then the gods will repay your weakness by having a grin or two at your expense. Should you fail to pilot your own ship, don’t be surprised at what inappropriate port you will find yourself docked.’ – Tom Robbins, Jitterbug Perfume
I preface this horoscope with that quote for two reasons: 1) I am feeling really luxuriously scandalously lazy and almost any worldly insight I have was already written 10-20 years ago by one of my favorite authors, Tom Robbins; 2) Because with the Sun in Taurus (sensuality) and the Full Moon in Scorpio (sex, sex, sex, yay, sex) all of us …

Wood Spoon: Chicken Pot Pie for the Soul & Lens

Many of us in the food blogosphere all carry around the same Canon s90 camera but very few of us actually know how to use it. There are several exceptions to this rule and one of my favorites is Julian aka DJJewelz. He uses the same camera as all of us, no Photoshop, and always manages to take beautiful pictures. Sure he has the artists’ eye but he also knows simple shortcuts for better pictures. My new friend Nastassia, of Let Me Eat Cake, and I were both talking at the Latin American Dessert Crawl about how in awe we were of DJJewelz’s pictures and how we so needed a class with him. During this crawl one of the stops …

Dining on the Edge: Dinner with Chef Keven

Dining on the Edge: Dinner with Chef Keven

There’s carnal pleasure and then there’s food pleasure. I’ve never endangered my life for carnal pleasure, but for food pleasure…I do it on a daily basis.
Growing up I was deathly allergic to many things, and over the last few weeks I had gotten mild symptoms of a severe allergy. When I decided to visit my doctor he did a few tests and referred me to an allergist. Later that week, I met with the allergist; he took one look at me said, “Have you been eating shellfish?!” I admitted that my frequent visits to the SGV for Asian food had exposed me to many fish-based sauces. He told me to cut it out for my own good, but I relented. …

Mi Piace: A Monday Night Happy Hour Worth Trying

Mi Piace: A Monday Night Happy Hour Worth Trying

One of the first places I ever went alone to in Los Angeles was Mi Piace in Pasadena. I was 17 and only a few months away from starting college at Woodbury University. I had to do some placement tests during the summer, so they knew what math and English classes to put me in. I knew no one in LA and my friend Sunshine (I am from Santa Cruz) was unable to come with me. She was several years older and we would always sleep at her brother’s house on our SoCal trips during my high school years. I had been conversing via AIM with a nice gay man that was an Interior Architecture Woodbury alum asking questions about …
