Neighborhood Profile: Exploring Venice in the Rain

Yes, the Westside is far for us Eastsiders, but Venice is one of those cool towns that is always worth going to. This last Friday was the first Friday of the month and you know what that means, First Fridays in Venice on Abbott Kinney. Abbott Kinney is not just the main drag in Venice it was also the name of the founder of the city who wanted to make the city a cultural center with art, food, and interesting people. If you have ever seen the Venice canals, that was created because he was modeling the city after Venice, Italy. This particular Friday was pouring. Josie was at a Lakers game and I was catching up with one of my favorite college friends, Nora. We made it out to the event at around 9pm. The official hours of First Fridays is 6pm to 10pm and all of the art galleries, bars, and restaurants are filled with locals getting to know the businesses. It may have been raining but there was no parking in sight. When we finally stopped, we needed a drink badly. We went to the Otheroom, where I have been once before with Nora. After that I was starving and I knew that there was a parking lot filled with food trucks nearby. We downed a drink and headed over. I was thrilled to see the Border Grill truck there, not just because I wanted to try it but also because my Pasadena food blogging friend Hot Pink Manolos was working it. I recently told her via Twitter that I missed her and she said the gourmet taco truck consumes most of her life now. This fact used to make me sad until I tried the food, now I want to her to keep on doing what she is doing.

Nora got a carne asada taco and I had the ceviche and the famous BG lemonade that I have downed at one too many events after a lot of adult drinking. Christina told me to poke the top with my straw like you would with boba. I had a funny flashback in my mind of doing such an act. A year or so ago I was deathly ill (I am a bit dramatic with illness) after 2 days of not leaving the house I decided to venture out to my favorite mall, the one in Arcadia. I bought a milk tea boba and then I thought to myself that my favorite part about boba is the insertion of the straw. At the time I was feverish and somehow poured the entire boba drink down my shirt. I left the mall in tears as clearly I was still too sick to be around the healthy people that know that a cup has to be help upwards instead of facing down while they are daydreaming. Clearly my mind, even at a normal temperature, is a wandering one. Let’s get back to the first Friday and my BG food. The ceviche was served in a corn cone that was then covered in a paper cone. The fish was very good quality and there were pickled onions on top, I wholeheartedly believe that everything should be pickled. In order to not eat our food with raindrops we headed into Nora’s car for comfort. I am sensitive to salt so the dish was too salty for me. Josie normally puts a ton of salt and lemon on everything and proclaims it is because she is Mexican. I understand the lemon element but the salt part is difficult for me to grasp. As a kid, I always loved those frozen ice cream cones with the hard chocolate on the bottom that fills the last triangle of the cone. When I got to the end of this cone I noticed a similiar thing, but this one had black beans at the bottom. When I discovered this part the whole dish totally came together. I mixed it up and it was a buffer not only  for the bottom of the cone but also for the salt that was overpowering the dish for me. The truth of the matter is that I say everything is too salty, but this was really great. Josie would tell me, “You aren’t Mexican, you don’t understand.” That is probably true. I will totally seek out this truck again, plus I think it may be the only way I can see my friend HPM again.

After we were done eating and the car smelled profusely of onions. I recommended we head to a bar in Venice that I heard about only that day. All I knew about this bar was that the bartenders wore naughty nurse outfits and it was in Venice. I asked my Twitter friends and FoodforFel and CitizenRobot came to my rescue in telling me the name of the bar was the Good Hurt. I am an overly dramatic hypocondriac neurotic Jewish woman, so it is safe to say I love going to the doctor. Despite never actually having anything wrong with me I can talk about my ailments for days and I love that my particular doctor indulges me by letting me be tested for everything. A hospital themed bar is right up my alley. The bartenders were hot and well, “Hello Nurse.” My biggest complaint with this establishment was that they only served beer, wine, vodka, and tequila. What, no whiskey? Let me go to what is right with this bar: big booths, pool tables, interesting music acts (Seeing Thingz was playing that night) and my favorite part was the lollipop jars at every table. It was the strangest most awesome bar I have ever been to; my mind was blown.

If the purpose of First Fridays is to get to know Venice better, then it completely succeeded. Sure I like the Otheroom and the other main establishments on the main drag that are hip and interesting but my style is a little more off the beaten path. I was born and raised in Santa Cruz where there are very few chains allowed in and a movement of activists and bumper stickers that say, “Keep Santa Cruz Weird.” As much as I have come to love well crafted cocktails, drive-thrus, and menus where everything taste just as you imagine it, there is something to be said for these unique finds that make a city so interesting. Thank god for Abbott Kinney and recognizing the need for cultural pockets long before every city was cookie cutter.

Stir It Up: Help for Haiti

If you saw our February event calendar, we overlooked one important event that has just been brought to our attention. Josie and I often proclaim that we are women of charity, but the truth of the matter is that we always have the feeling that we want to do more and that we can’t do enough. This event that we heard of is called Stir It 28 and it is alliance of food bloggers trying to bring relief to Haiti. I got several pleads from my Jewish mother to adopt a Haitian baby but helping in this way seems far more logical and realistic. Here are all of the fantastic details and simple way that you can help:

STIR IT 28 is 3-part fund-raising effort to help in the relief of Haiti’s devastating earthquake, leaving thousands dead. 3 food bloggers have come together to bring awareness and raise money for the island! On Feb. 21st, 4 cities will host an evening of culinary adventures, featuring food from chefs, restaurants and food bloggers in each city!

100% of money raised goes directly to YELE & Share Our Strength. They have accepted our campaign & are helping us get the word out!

If you’re a food blogger, we’re inviting you to participate in Bren’s hunger campaign called “Hunger Lives No More: One Comment. One Eats.” For each comment left on the 1st post of February, we ask that you donate ONE food item to Share Our Strength. We are coordinating with SOS on getting all donated food to Haiti. If you participate, email bren at flanboyanteats dot com and you will receive a badge to place on your blog indicating that “You Gave.”

Let’s STIR IT!!!

We will be participating in the event and if you are interested in helping out, our L.A. contact person is Chrystal of Duo Dishes. If you would like to purchase tickets in advance  (highly recommended)  visit either Flanboyant Eats or Coco Cooks and click the Stir It 28 logo at the top of their pages.  It will take you straight to the Paypal site to purchase the $30 space.

I want to give a huge shout out to Greg of SippitySup for offering his house for the event. The devastion in Haiti is massive but this is a small, easy, and tasty way that you can help. I am not a big Bob Marley fan, probably because I am from Santa Cruz and it seems like everyone I grew up with idolizes him with the initiation of their first joint. Anyway, I love Wyclef and if he loves Bob Marley, well then Bob is good enough for me…Plus I love the Stir It Up message.

February: So Much to Do. I Really Need to Get Cloned!

January was a tough month for the UGs, but February looks brighter. It’s the month of Black History and the ill-fated Valentine’s Day. Sure, Carina and I don’t have dates for V-Day, but that’s never been a guarantee of a roaring good time. This is our first year being single on V-Day and even though we’ve doted over boyfriends in the past, there’s no double suicides in our future. And well, my own love affair with Mr. Fig is looking pretty grim. I’ve come to not expect too much of him, mainly, so I won’t be let down. On the bright side, the UGs will be wiping away tears of joy at February’s upcoming events. Here’s a few to look out for:

DineLA has been extended: Yay! DineLA has been extended through Feb 5th and prices will range from $16-$ 28 for lunch and $26-$44 for dinner. Who will you hit up at these can’t resist prices? And can we join you? Please! Maybe we’re too available…

LA Street Food Festival: Shawna Dawson, of SauceLA and former community manager of Yelp LA, and UniqueLA have teamed up to bring you LA’s first food truck festival for Valentines Day weekend on Feb. 13th. “The goal is to get as much L.A. street food (from taco trucks to chic trucks) in one spot with entertainment, live art, music and, quite possibly, a pop-up UniqueLA mini-market,” explained Shawna Dawson. And just to add more sugar to the incentive pot, rumor has it that the UGs will be raffling off a five-stop (and course) limo-ride dinner in downtown with who else, the UGs. We think that’s a good thing… We’ll keep you posted, my lovelies.

Cupcake Challenge: Come and sample LA’s best cupcakes on Feb 20 at the Renaissance Hotel, Hollywood from 12-3P. Admission is $40. The UGs will be judges so come and say hello. There will be so much sugar and icing there that you may just wet yourself. Some of the vendors include: Layers, Southern Girl Desserts, Just Minis, Taverns, and Charmed Cupcakes among many others.

80’s Prom Party: is February 26th at the Renaissance Hotel, Hollywood at 9P until 2A. Tickets are a steal at $30. And lastly, and my favorite part, 100% of the proceeds will go to the local animal rescue/shelter. You know the UGs will be there, we had so much fun at last year’s prom.

Buy Flowers on V-Day and give to Charity: Organized by LA’s, Taste of the Nation, the idea is that if you buy flowers on V-day, you are automatically donating to charity. That simple. Dandelion Ranch is an LA florist and by purchasing a bouquet from Dandelion Ranch a percentage will be donated to TOTNLA. Call them up here: (323) 640-1590, then say “Valentine’s Day promotion.” It’s that easy. Buy flowers and kids get food. Also, if you really want to be a baller, participating restaurants will deliver flowers tableside to your date and will give also give a donation to Taste of the Nation. Right now Fig, Grace and Ford’s Filling Station are in.

Food Ballin’: Reminiscing on my Elite Days

I know the Super Bowl is coming up and normally my feminist response to that is always, “Oh, you mean the day with the highest rate of domestic violence.” Sure, I am a buzz kill but I just don’t get football, what I do understand is being a food baller. I believe this whole concept began on New Years Eve when A.K. told her hubby, Chuck, that we were carb-loading in preparation for the last night of 2009. He was puzzled and said, “What do you guys think you are a football team?” It was at that point when we decided we are a food balling team. We have eating marathon and can drink enormous quantities due to our properly padded tummies. Anyway, to continue on with the metaphor, last Thursday was a big game day. The line-up was insane there were many plays to be had. Okay, I really don’t know any more sports terminology or references to keep this up, sorry. First on the list, I had lunch with Minty at Church & State. This meal was then to be followed by dinner and drinks at Oinkster and last on the list was a Yelp Elite event at Little Cave. I am a strong believer that if you want strong bones than you must eat bone marrow.

We began with more than just bone marrow, we also had the brussel spouts with dates, and the mac n cheese. Now, let me start by saying, I have been to Church & State several times but normally sit at the bar and have a few cocktails and order a couple of plates. This was my first time to have a whole actual meal and also there were three of us at the table just so you know that the Minty and I weren’t the only ones throwing down. The bone marrow was fatty deliciousness. Had I been more uncouth and not sharing with two other ladies, I would  have grabbed it with my hands and gnawed the rest off with my teeth. I have had the mac n cheese several times before and it was as good (read: buttery) as I remembered. However, it was the brussel sprouts that stole the show. I feel like I say it in every post but I love fruit in almost every dish and the dates added so much to the dish (that’s what people say about me. Relax, I kid). On Thursday is when I started my seafood weekend by ordering the Loup de Mer, which was Sea Bass, chanterelle mushrooms, red flame and Thompson seedless grapes. I ordered the full order, which was good because in this small serving I needed both pieces of fish. Anyone knowing me and seeing grapes on the menu, would know this is what I’d order. It was delicious and a total Carina dish. Minty had the Bouillabaisse (full order, of course, she was on game day) and the other lady in our party had the small order of Steak Frites.

It was nice to have my first real meal at C & S. The lunch crowd rush was massive and loud but the whole time I felt like I was in New York. Things then mellowed out and I remembered I was in LA when we realized that the guy next to us was Duff from Ace of Cakes and he later was talking to Chef Walter. By the way, Josie proclaims that every time she is at C & S she sees someone famous. I am not sure I believe her but I know we did once see Mrs. Elvis (Priscilla Presley) at the bar next to us. Oh and the best part of the meal was Minty had a 30% off coupon from BBE. After lunch, I headed back to Pasadena and disgustingly grabbed a cupcake, because I was already so stuffed, and ended up detouring to my house for a nap. It was now 3:30 and I had dinner at 6:30 at the Oinkster, so appropriate I know. We were planning on doing a pitcher of Solidarity from our boys at Eagle Rock Brewery but they were sold out. I was “good” and instead got a burger, chili cheese fries, and a Telegraph White. I had a few bites of ClimbinChiro piggy fries (their version of In-n-Out’s animal fries) and the pastrami. I also had the most uncouth moment by shaking the bbq sauce, which turned out to be the thinner Carolina BBQ sauce that then flew out and landed all over the seat and table of our lounge neighbors. I called it the lounge because it is the low square Ikea tables as opposed to the normal height tables on the other side. The food was really good and I sure felt like a piggy.

Our last stop of the night was the Yelp Elite party. The theme for the night was B.Y.O.S. (Bring Your Own Sombrero). You may have heard I am sad that I don’t have Elite status in 2010. I know the solution, I must write more reviews, but it seems exhausting. Minty knows I am sad with my new position (or lack there of) so she let me be her +1. Why are Yelp Elite Events great? Free food, free booze, and you get to see somewhat awkward foodies and internet creepers get wasted. That is like all of my favorite things. We got to Little Cave on time, you have to for these events because food always go fast. I was sombrero-less for the night but don’t worry I kept myself busy. Jarritos was one of their sponsors so I had several drinks of that mixed with tequila. I ran into a ton of old friends, people I’ve dated, and one guy I just walked up to and  said, “I’ve been to a party at your house in Echo Park.” Since Dawson is no longer with Yelp LA I have been kind of anti, but the truth of the matter is that I really like Yelpers. I love the drama, I love food talkin, and I love the events. There were perfect Mexican chocolate cupcakes from Cakified and tacos from Ricos Tacos that serve every Thursday at Little Cave. I met the new CM Katie B., got my Yelp lunch box, took way too many lollipops, and had a great time. Mark my words, I will be back to my Elite Status sometime in 2010 so I can be a stronger Food Baller….I am first string material…you saw how much I just ate.
